In this document some of the recommendations are made specifically to counter widespread abuses of "hired guns," experts who see their roles as advocates of their clients' positions rather than reporters of facts and honest opinions. Issues covered include conflicts of interest, reliance on assumptions, limiting research to an artificially small number of cases, methods to identify standards of care by which design professionals' acts are evaluated, qualifications for accepting an engagement, integrity of tests, illustrative devices, custody and control of materials, confidentiality, demeanor, and fees, among others.
