Member-firm performs a geotechnical engineering study with recommendations for foundation design, fill placement, compaction and observation of construction for a four-story building, located on a sloping site with 15 ft of fall toward the adjacent river. As the superstructure was erected one of the rows of the footings settled from 1 to 3". When more settlement happened after two months, further investigation and tests led to design change and repairs that were costly to all parties.
